Tomorrow, October 24 is Food Day, a nationwide celebration and a movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food. In celebration of this event, we will be showing the documentary Food Stamped at the Hartford Public Library from 6-8 pm. Food Stamped is an informative and humorous documentary film following a couple as they attempt to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet on a food stamp budget. Through their adventures they consult with members of U.S. Congress, food justice organizations, nutrition experts, and people living on food stamps to take a deep look at America’s broken food system. Food Stamped received a number of awards including the Jury Feature Prize at the San Francisco Independent Film Festival and Best Documentary at the Lighthouse International Film Festival.
A panel discussion will follow the screening. Panelists include Martha Page, executive director, Hartford Food System; Lucy Nolan, executive director, End Hunger Connecticut; Grace Damio, director of Research and Service Initiatives, Hispanic Health Council; and SNAP recipient Shannon Massey, Americorps VISTA Leader at the New England Farm Workers’ Council in Holyoke, MA. The movie and following discussion is sponsored by Connecticut Humanities. This program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments.
